The succinct description of what was wanted for this custom quilt was: Malachite.
Malachite is a greenish copper mineral that forms incredible intricate geode patterns. Not your typical inspiration for a quilt, but it was what this geologist wanted. They loved the color, acknowledged that the patterns were too intricate to mimic, but reiterated that they were attracted to the rounded yet parallel bandings with angular corners.

Matching the malachite color turned out to be easy. Getting contrast so the quilt didn’t turn out to be an indistinguishable mass of green was harder, but malachite can have quite light layers, often pastel green or almost cream or white. As I puzzled over the design, I kept repeating: soft greens and blues, curves and stripes, soft greens, curves, and stripes until this malachite inspired quilt was the result.
