Antique Market

I’ve said that I’m lucky because I love it all. I’m drawn to creation but can’t pass up an opportunity to pay homage to our foremothers when I see fine examples of needlework from the long past.

These quilts are for sale. Contact me at lia@overmoreover.com for more information.

Hawaiian quilts are known for their softly rounded applique shapes in symmetrical designs radiating out in 4 corners from central motif. This fine example makes use of the form in a 4 x 3 block pattern with a magnificent royal palm border. Bought near Sturbridge Village, Massachusetts. Probably more than a hundred years old.

Double 9-patch blocks are set on point with an unusual bold red alternate plain block to set them apart in this remarkably effective Amish design. Hand quilted. 1990’s era. Good condition.

Though only 35 years old, the Ohio Star (also called Mosaic Patchwork or Flying Crows) block in alternating brick red and bright yellow blocks on a floral background, is reminiscent of quilts from an earlier era.

Buttery yellow stars on a white background make this quilt from the Toronto area particularly cheerful. The pattern is known by many names: Blazing Star, Little Star, Morning Star, Rising Star, Star of the East. It was published in magazines in the 1930’s. The quilt likely dates back to the 1930’s too.

It’s rare to find a utility quilt in such fine condition. Though it was made to be warm, this quilt’s maker had a sense of playfulness when she chose red wool to tie the corners (not quilting stitches). The patches are men’s suiting. The binding and back are pink and purple upholstery fabric.
80″ x 63

This summer weight quilt has no batting. Its 1920s fabrics arranged in wedges in a circle is usually identified as a Dresden plate, but is more accurately called an Aster, Pinwheel, or Sunflower. Black buttonhole stitching provides a lovely contrast. Made in Massachusetts.

Quilts based on a hexagon shape are more unusual than those based on squares. This one is constructed with long diamond shapes.
