FAQ

What are the steps in getting a custom quilt made?

You tell me:

  • Whether you’re thinking your quilt will be used on a bed, decorating a wall, as a baby blanket, as a wedding gift or something else. Possibilities include a lap quilt for keeping warm while reading, a wedding chuppah, something gorgeous for a picnic blanket.
  • How large you want your quilt to be
  • The general color scheme
  • Anything specific as to fabrics you’d like me to use or themes you’d like me to incorporate
I’ll help you with those decisions, tell you how much it costs, and how long it will take. The price will include design, materials, and labor. These will not be itemized. When your quilt is done and payment is received, I’ll mail it to you (U.S. addresses only).

How does payment work?

  • You’ll give me the go-ahead to get started and pay 1/4 of the total. I take checks and paypal.
  • I’ll show you the design I’m thinking of and get your thoughts as to how you like it.
  • When you give me the okay to begin construction, you’ll pay another quarter. I’ll buy fabric and begin.
  • I’ll show you photographs of how it’s coming along as I go. You can give me input, but I, as the artist, will be responsible for the design.
  • When the top is done and to your liking, you’ll pay the remaining amount of the total. I’ll complete your quilt with machine quilting, binding, and label.

What size should my quilt be?

Standard bed sizes for the top of the mattress with no overhang are:

  • Crib: 52″ x 28″
  • Twin: 75″ x 38″
  • Full: 75″ x 54″
  • Queen: 80″ x 60″
  • King: 80″ x 76″

The largest size I make is 80″ x 80″.

If you’re thinking of a baby quilt, I urge you choose 40″ x 40″. Babies start out small, but they grow fast. That’s large enough to go in a playpen, also large enough for kids to pretend the quilt is a cape and they’re superheroes. If you’re thinking of a quilt for a bed, I urge you to choose 80″ x 80″. For artwork that will be hung on a wall, measure the area and leave at least 5″ of wall showing on all sides for the most beautiful presentation.

What colors can I choose?

Any that you like! If you’re stuck for what will look good together, look at magazine pictures, a favorite shirt, or take a photograph. Anything that has the colors you like will give me an idea. The cards in the paint department of a hardware store are another source of inspiration.

What materials will my quilt be made of?

I use only 100% woven quilting cotton. (T-shirts are knits. If you’d like a quilt made from t-shirts, I can recommend a friend who works with them.) I use Warm & Natural batting for the middle layer. The back can be flannel if you need a warmer quilt or quilting cotton if that’s too hot for you.

Can I bring you the fabric I want my quilt made of?

That’s not recommended, but if you’d like me to consider a fabric that has all the colors you want in it, let me have a look to see if it can be incorporated.

What are the steps in making a quilt?

A quilt is 3 layers: top, batting, and back. The steps are:

  • Construct the top by sewing different fabrics together.
  • Baste (safety pin) the top together with the batting and back.
  • Stitch the layers together. This is where favorite quotes and designs can be sewn into the texture of your quilt.
  • Bind the quilt with a final edge that keeps the batting from poking out.
  • All these steps are done by machine with the exception of hand sewing on the binding.

Can I hang my quilt on the wall, or does it have to go on a bed?

Either bed or wall is fine. Each quilt comes with a sleeve sewn on the back. To hang, slip a rod or yardstick through the sleeve and rest the ends of hooks attached to the wall.

What does the quilt look like on the back?

The back is where the stitching shines. You could practically display your quilt either way.

What if I only want the top?

You may commission only the top and get your top quilted elsewhere if that’s what you prefer.
