“My wife loves blue, in all shades, and so do I. She also loves pastels as a rule. Overall, we are conservative with regard to color choices in general, and I am averse to large quantities of pink in particular. If you are seeking thematic inspiration, you might consider the fact that our marriage is a union of descendants of two cultures with long textile histories, the Jews and the Persians. I don’t know any of that history myself, but if you’re curious, it’s somewhere to look.”

I knew nothing of Jewish or Persian textile traditions and went off to have a look. What I discovered astonished me. The design elements in both traditions had in common: little in the way of human representation, a look of intertwining geometrical shapes, intricate flower motifs, multiple borders, and ever recurrent 6 sided star and 60 degree angles. The Persians used these in Oriental rugs; the Jews in stained glass. All I had to do was adapt it to something I could piece with fabric. I became a hexagon fan. The result is spectacular.
