Log cabin has a special meaning for quilters. Not only is it a rustic dwelling of the American frontier, it’s also a traditional quilt design.

The clients who commissioned this quilt don’t live off the land, but they do have a view of the Rocky Mountains, have kestrels and chickadees visit their bird feeder, and are a short walk from cattle grazing and prairie dogs poking up their heads in an open space that features lupines and asters. They wanted something that would look good in their house, typical coal company housing over a hundred years old, and filled with woodwork. I thought of maple and oak leaves and the bark of spruce and fir trees. The quilt pattern is Square In A Square, a close relative of the Log Cabin.
